Pinhead Oatmeal or Steel Cut Oats are considered the oldest and most traditional types of oatmeal. They are made from whole grains, with only the outer husk removed before the groats are cut into pieces. When cooked, Pinhead oatmeal produces a hearty and nutty porridge with a robust flavour. It is a common practice to soak the oatmeal overnight. Pinhead is also an excellent option for enhancing the texture and nutritional value of soups, stews, and haggis. It can be used as a topping for pies, puddings, and crumbles, or as a coating for fish and meat before cooking.

The pinhead oats I could find in local supermarkets were limited to a small, all be it nicely presented, tin can containing approximately 300g. It just wasn’t cutting it. A quick search found a good sized bag of Scottish oats that turned out to be a very nice low waste option. I now have plenty for porridge and experiments with crumbles, stews and stuffing. Life is good.

I purchased a bag of pin-head (or steel cut) oats, the price and quality of which were outstanding! The flavour and texture of the porridge was miles better than any commercial porridge. Just moved over to pinhead so it would be useful to have a small recipe sheet describing different ways of cooking pinhead. It seems incredibly versatile. Not a single shop in Cheltenham or Bristol selling pinhead oats and difficult to get hold of from local mill at Shipton.

Husband and Grandsons have pinhead oatmeal for breakfast every day. I liked the enclosed recipe for biscuits will be trying baking them soon. It’s very handy ordering on line although I do miss the drive to Kelso and visiting the shops! When we visit Kelso it’s usually on a Saturday when GHK are playing Kelso and you are closed!!
